The year was 2017, and I was barely using my DSLR, the Canon 1200D. I was struggling to use the basic features and took a few pictures. One of my nephews, an ardent photography enthusiast, after seeing my pictures, said that I needed good lessons in composition. This article talks about an award winning photograph.
So, I ended up planting some flowers in my garden. I also came across a Canon Macro lens 100mm, which I rented. While trying out this lens, I tried out with a shallow depth of field with the subject (a lower f stop - leading to bigger aperture, blurry background). A single bloomed voilet, which I tried to fill the frame with. The result looked very different from other pictures that I had taken for the same flower

The picture clearly shows lines on the petals(one of the ways you could show delicacy) , pistils, and the exposure under natural light. This flower was a pop out.
Renting a lens can be a good inexpensive way to learn photography. Natural light is probably one of your best bets. There was no post processing involved to enhance this picture. It was as is.
In a photography competition held at my office. This picture got the 3rd prize. This motivated me to try out macro pictures and macro flower photography which led to more awards
